Go to Device Manager und look under "Audio"
If you have problems in finding the correct chip or you are not sure,
"everest" (Freeware) will give you the correct informations

go to properties and disable it ( NOT REMOVE )
Shut down your machine unplug your sound card.
For Onboard Device:
Shut down and disable your sound in your bios.
Reboot.
Now download LATEST audio driver for your sound card or audio Chip (AC97) (from chip manufacturer NOT from mobo site) and install.
If not,
Go to Device Manager,
just to see the damn "old audio driver or generic driver" again.
Right click on this device,
go to Properties, Drivers and UPDATE DRIVER........select "Install
from a list or ...." THEN " Don't search. I will choose......." and
select the driver for your audio adapter and reboot
After rebooting everything should work.
Check now for old and/or wrong(ly) installed) drivers.
Right click on "My computer"

Add
devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices
Value = 1
reboot
Right click on "My computer"

Device manager
View
show "hidden devices"
now delete grayed out audio drivers
